The Breaking Out of War in 1861 According to most historians, the seceding of the states in the South from the North led to the Civil War. The reasons for which the Southern states wanted to become independent were because their had been four decades of great sectional conflict between the two. The main reason for the south wanting to succeed was due to the North’s view on slavery. Between the North and South there were deep economic, social, and political differences. Some just see the cause of the war as a contest between plantation agriculture and industrializing capitalism. Modern historians see the causes as going right back in time.†¦show more content†¦The rise in cotton exportation meant that slavery was a must. The South compared slavery with the wage-slave system of the North and said that slaves were better cared for then free factory workers. The South feared what would happen if the slaves were free. They saw slavery as essential to the peace, safety and prosperity of the South. After the American Revolution, there were demands for political equality and Northerners goals were free public education and better salaries and working conditions. The South did not feel that these matters were important. Northerners was slavery as preventing the human right of being a free person. These views of the North set its quest of complete abolition of slavery. As the South found available territory to expand the North opposed them to extend slavery. Evidence that the North wanted to limit the number of slave states came in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. This measure regulated the extension of slavery in the United States; this seemed to be in danger when as the result of the Mexican War the south acquired new regions. The compromise of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 seemed to be broken by the North as many set underground railroads in order to hide them and free them.
